Career

Pratima, from her early college days had an ambition to get into politics & she got her first opportunity at the age of 18, when she joined the Youth Congress by paying the membership fees of Re. 1. She was also the president of her college’s cultural union at that time. During those days, Vijay Sardesai was the President of GPYC.

Later at the age of 20, she was appointed as the General Secretary of GPYC and soon after, she completed her education in Law & she became the chief of the Legal Cell of Goa Congress. Due to this, she got an opportunity of interacting with the members of the Youth Congress from other states of India. Later, she also actively participated and represented her state Goa at various Youth Congress camps in various cities like Bengaluru, Chennai & Hyderabad.

During one camp organised in Andhra Pradesh; which was named the ‘Aam Admi Ka Sipahi’, Pratima addressed the gathering in the presence of Rahul Gandhi, which impressed him immensely and he instantly appoint her as the Vice President of the Goa Pradesh Youth Congress (GPYC) in the year 2011, after serving the party for almost 12 (twelve) years in the Goa political circuit.

She later served the party in various capacities, before becoming the Goa Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee President. In the month of March, 2021; Pratima contested the Navelim Zilla Panchayat by-poll as a candidate of the Indian National Congress, where she was defeated by an Independent Candidate named Edwin Cipru Cardoso.

She later resigned from her post. She announced her decision on Twitter, where she wrote,

“I, Adv Pratima Betsy Coutinho hereby tender my resignation from the primary membership of Indian National Congress with immediate effect.”

After her resignation, her post of the Vice-President of Goa Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee was occupied by Beena Shantaram.

Pratima was also a former Deputy Mayor of the Margao Municipal Corporation of Goa. She was also the Ex-Market Chairman of MMC Goa.

In the month of March, 2021; she joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the presence of its national convener & also the Chief Minister of Delhi, Mr. Arvind Kejriwal.

Welcoming her to the Aam Aadmi Party, Arvind Kejriwal tweeted,

“Really happy to welcome one of the most dynamic young leaders of Goa, Pratima Coutinho @adv_coutinho to AAP. Goa wants change, Goa wants young leaders like her to represent the Aam Aadmi of Goa.”

As of now in the year 2022, she is serving as the Vice President & Spokesperson of the Aam Aadmi Party – Goa

Controversies

In the year 2014, Pratima was criticised by the media after her husband, Savio Coutinho, asked people to support Narendra Sawaikar, a BJP candidate in the April assembly elections. However, Pratima later said that Savio has his own political ideology and her roots lie in Congress.

In March 2021, after Pratima Coutinho resigned from her post of the Goa Pradesh Mahila Congress President and joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), where Girish Chodankar, Goa state Congress President accused her of joining AAP for her selfish interests. He said that Pratima had committed political suicide by leaving Congress. He said, “Pratima has still not understood the game of politics. In politics, two plus two does not equal four. If she has gone with AAP thinking that the votes she got and the votes AAP got will combine and she will win, that is not the way arithmetic works in politics”.
