Feet to cm formula
One inch is exactly 2.54 centimetres, and one foot is 12 inches, or 30.48 centimetres. To convert a height:
cm = (feet × 12 + inches) × 2.54
Example: 5 feet 7 inches = (5 × 12 + 7) × 2.54 = 67 × 2.54 = 170.18 cm, which rounds to 170.2 cm.
To go the other way, divide the centimetres by 2.54 to get inches, then divide by 12. The whole number is the feet and the remainder is the inches. Example: 165 cm ÷ 2.54 = 64.96 inches = 5 feet 4.96 inches, or about 5 feet 5 inches.
What “5.7” means in a height
In India, heights are often written as 5.7 or 5.10, meaning 5 feet 7 inches and 5 feet 10 inches. That is not the same as 5.7 feet, which is 5 feet 8.4 inches. Mixing the two up adds about 4 cm to a 5.7 height. The comparison boxes above read 5.7 as 5 feet 7 inches and say so in the result.

How to measure your height accurately at home
A converter is only as good as the number you put in. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) publishes these steps for measuring a child’s height at home, and the same method works for adults:
- Take off shoes, bulky clothing and hair accessories, and stand on a floor that is not carpeted, against a wall with no skirting or moulding in the way.
- Stand with your back to a flat wall, feet flat and together, heels against the wall, and look straight ahead.
- Have someone lower a flat object, such as a hardback book or a ruler, until it rests firmly on the top of your head at a right angle to the wall.
- Mark the wall lightly where the bottom of the object meets it, with the measurer’s eyes at the same level as the object.
- Measure from the floor to the mark with a metal tape, and write it down to the nearest 0.1 cm or 1/8 inch.
Measure at the same time of day each time.
“I am 172cm at morning and 170cm at evening”
— r/short, June 2026 (10 upvotes, post excerpt)
That user’s 2 cm swing is the difference between 5 feet 7.7 inches and 5 feet 6.9 inches, enough to change the number someone writes on a dating profile or a form. For a figure you can repeat, measure in the morning, barefoot, against a wall.
Studies of spinal disc compression report that people lose about 1% of their height between morning and evening, roughly 1 to 2 cm for most adults, and most of that within a few hours of getting up. A height taken in the morning is usually the tallest you will measure. FAQHeight converter questions
