How to find the age difference between two people
- Enter the first date of birth. Adding a name is optional; it only makes the result easier to read.
- Enter the second date of birth. The order does not matter, as the calculator works out who is older.
- Press Calculate age gap. You get the gap in years, months and days, the same gap in months, weeks and days, and both people’s ages today.
How the age gap is counted
The age gap is the time from the older person’s birth date to the younger person’s birth date. It is counted the same way as an age: whole calendar months first, then the days left over. If a month is shorter than the starting day, that month’s last day is used.
The gap never changes over time. Two people born 5 years, 3 months and 4 days apart stay exactly that far apart, even though the share of their lives that the gap represents gets smaller as they get older.
Why the gap in years can look different from the difference in ages. Ages only change on birthdays, so two people 4 years and 11 months apart can be 4 or 5 years apart in age depending on the day you check. The exact gap above does not have that problem.
The “half your age plus seven” rule
For two adults, the calculator also shows a popular rule of thumb about age gaps in relationships: the younger partner should be at least half the older partner’s age plus seven years. It is a social convention, not a scientific test, and it is only shown when both people are 18 or older.

Whatever view you take, start from the exact figure. Two people 7 years and 2 months apart and two people 8 years and 11 months apart can both be described as “about 8 years”, so enter both birth dates above before comparing proposals.

How do I calculate the age difference between two people?
Take the earlier birth date and count forward to the later one: first the whole years, then the whole months, then the remaining days. The calculator does this and also gives the total in weeks and days.
Does it matter which date I enter first?
No. The calculator checks which date is earlier and always reports how much older the first-born person is.
What if both people share a birthday?
If the dates are identical, there is no gap. If they share the day and month but not the year, the gap is a whole number of years with no months or days.
Can I use it for siblings, parents or friends?
Yes. The age gap works for any two people. The relationship rule of thumb is only an extra line and can be ignored.
