How to use it

How to use the love calculator

  1. Type your name in the first box, in English letters.
  2. Type the other person’s name in the second box.
  3. Press Calculate love score. You get a percentage and the full working, letter by letter.
The method

How the love percentage is calculated

Many online love calculators never say how they get their number, and some give a different answer every time. This one uses an old pen-and-paper method, the TRUE LOVE count, and shows every step.

  1. Write both names together and ignore spaces, accents and anything that is not a letter.
  2. Count how many times each letter of TRUE appears (T, R, U and E) and add those counts.
  3. Do the same for the letters of LOVE (L, O, V and E).
  4. If either total is 10 or more, add its digits together until it is a single digit.
  5. Put the two digits side by side. TRUE gives the tens and LOVE gives the units, so 3 and 1 make 31%.

Worked example: Rahul and Priya. The letters are R, A, H, U, L, P, R, I, Y, A. TRUE: T 0, R 2, U 1, E 0, total 3. LOVE: L 1, O 0, V 0, E 0, total 1. Score: 31%.

Why the spelling changes the score

Because the score comes only from letters, adding a surname or changing the spelling can move it a lot. The same two people can score very differently:

Names enteredTRUE countLOVE countScore
Rahul and Priya3131%
Rahul Sharma and Priya4141%
Rahul and Priya Verma5353%
Rahul Sharma and Priya Verma6363%

So a low score says nothing about a relationship. It only says that the names do not contain many Ts, Rs, Us, Es, Ls, Os or Vs. Names written in Hindi or another script have to be typed in English letters, and different spellings (Priya or Preeya) will give different results.

Why people still play it

For many people the love calculator is a school-days memory rather than a serious test. A post on r/IndiaNostalgia put it simply:

“Remember using the Love Calculator? It was so exciting to get a high percentage between yourself and your crush.”

— r/IndiaNostalgia, January 2023 (82 upvotes, post title)

That is the right way to use it: as a game between friends. If you want to recreate the old pen-and-paper version exactly, the working shown under each result is the same count you would do in a notebook.

Other name games to try

For a different answer from the same two names, play FLAMES, which crosses out shared letters instead of counting them. To compare two people’s birthdays, use the age gap calculator.

FAQ

Love calculator questions

Is the love calculator accurate?

It is accurate as arithmetic: the same names always give the same score, and the working is shown. It does not measure anything about real feelings or compatibility, so treat it as a game.

Why do other love calculators give a different percentage?

Each site uses its own formula, and many do not publish it. Some use the names in a hidden formula, some add birth dates and some appear to pick numbers at random. This page uses the TRUE LOVE count and shows it.

Does the order of the names matter?

No. The calculator counts the letters of both names together, so swapping them gives the same score.

Should I use first names or full names?

Either works, but they give different scores. Many people try both, as in the table above.

Are the names I type saved?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is sent to FamousTarz.
